Nov 2017: FFXIV, Stardew Valley, FFXV Comrades, Nintendo Switch

I’m still here! (…and still forgetting that I am here as well; thanks life for not giving me time to update pretty much ever.)

Okay, where are we?

FFXIV: I’m on a temporary hiatus from Eorzea at the moment… and by temporary, I mean “since Monday morning until probably Friday” and that’s it. I thought I’d be out longer, but I don’t think I’ll have to be anymore. My character’s “Brenna Ce’dria” now (curse the inability to capitalize more than one letter per word), instead of “Ria Hawke” and she made a trip to the aesthetician (I think I mentioned these before? I don’t remember) but she’s still the same character/progression.

She's quite heroic, fighting off an Ascian the way she is.

I’m right at the end of Heavensward so far as I can tell; I just got to Aszys Lla, which is awkward because just like transitioning from the end of 7th Astral Era plot to HW, I’m not used to mobs and quests being my level anymore. That means a lot of Brenna rushing into fights and dying, unfortunately. It also means I’ve been taking some time off for beast tribe dailies instead of progressing. >.>

Stardew Valley: I got here late, as usual, but we picked the game up on PS4 a few weeks ago. Farmer Brenna runs the Insomnia Farm (I was wide awake at 3am when I started my game, it sounded appropriate to the time) and is in ~loooove~ with Abigail. Even if Abby does eat rocks. Which is super, super weird, but she asked me to play Nintendo with her. How was I supposed to say no? Although really, if I’d known about the last bit of this update a few weeks ago, I’d have waited to get the game… Also, this is on my list of things I’m supposed to be streaming at random, but I normally play at like, 4-6am when I’m unable to sleep and that’s not really the best streaming time.

FFXV Comrades: This is finally out! The early combat, of course, is pretty much identical to the beta when I was in that, but so far I love both the setting (you’re a Glaive defending Lestallum after Noct’s disappearance/during the eventual 10 years of darkness) and that it’s Libertus who kind of runs things for the Glaive there. I mean yeah, the hunters and some of the Crownsguard are also there (Monica gives out missions, for example), but you’re a Glaive. You know you’re the one who’s important. And who, in my games, could be as important a crossover as Ria Hawke?

We still aren't sure if she's Ria or not, but she's cute, so does it matter?

Anyhow, I’ll be streaming this off and on, probably starting this weekend. I haven’t tried it yet, but it doesn’t look like it supports actual parties, but you can setup custom rooms so I guess we can use those if anyone wants to join me for games.

And finally… Nintendo Switch: So yeah, we recently received one of these? (Recently like yesterday.) I liked the system when some friends brought theirs (yes, plural friends and plural Switches) over when it first came out, but we didn’t really have any sort of draw to get our own. Well, one’s been gotten for us, so I have to find things to play on it now. Since I already have Stardew for (and well established on) PS4 I’m not going to get that for it, and I’m super easy mode so I don’t want Zelda, so what should I get? We do have Tetris/Puyo Puyo & Splatoon 2, but that’s all so far. So 1) what do you guys suggest and 2) add me!

The Brenquisition – Final Fantasy XV New Game+ (Chapter 4)

I feel horrible, because this chapter was done almost two months ago and I forgot completely to save it and put it in a post here, and my playlists in Twitch and Youtube. Chapter 4, of course, is quite short: Noct & Co. head to the Disc of Cauthess, hoping to find a cure for some horrible migraines.

Also there’s always the Twitch copy, if anyone prefers that. As for future posts, I’ll try and get at least Chapter 5 in sometime in the next week or two. I’ve been kind of craving the game again, and I want to work my way up to the new stuff in Chapter 12 as quickly as I can.

“Offline”

While I have spent the last few days literally offline thanks to feeling rough, I’m not really referring to that at the moment. Rather, I’m talking the not only few games that I’ve streamed from my PS4, but also FFXIV as well. I’m still gaming, for the most part, but it’s been on my shiny SNESClassic. I’ve only put real time into Zelda so far, which I finished about a week ago (adulting means playing only two days a week at the moment, so not bad time at all).

I’m holding off on a lot of the other stuff on purpose, though: I’ve made it extremely clear that I want a capture card for Christmas this year, and when I get that I’ll be playing the other, more significant games on the system on streams. Well, that means I have to fight my way through setting up OBS properly, but Twitch itself looks like it has tutorials for that so instead of muddling through like I tried before I’ll use those to try and get it set right.

Anyway… yeah. I’ll get some more The Wolf Among Us in sooner or later (streaming), and I’ll be back on FFXIV hopefully this weekend since I’m almost at the end of Heavensward (not streaming). FFXV Comrades is coming soon (stream, but also PSN = BrennaCeDria to join me!), and I still have about half of FFXV to replay for my plot-only streams (including the extra chapter 12 content!). I also have, of all things, Hatoful Boyfriend since it was a PS+ game, and I’ll probably play that online, too. So I have plenty to play between now and my birthday. (At which point a hopefully very special game will be out to add to my list. ^_^ Again, PSN = BrennaCeDria to join me.)

Small #SNESClassic Gripe

I’ve gotten so spoiled–obsessively spoiled–by games allowing me to take screenshots. (I switched to mostly PC gaming for this, then PS4 giving me both caps and streaming has been a dream.) I don’t have any sort of external capture device still, though, so I can’t stream or capture ANYTHING.

So, in the meantime, I’m stuck only typing things up. Or, worse, taking pics of my tv like some sort of retro heathen.

…In light of not having proper access to share my games, here’s a very quick update on Link to the Past: made it to the third dungeon in the Dark World, which I hate. I don’t remember being fond of the fourth one, either. I think I have about four hours in the game (ah, the benefit of having played dozens of times over ~25 years) but with my luck, I’ll double that time to eight by the time these next two dungeons are done. Anyway, this post is pre-work, so I have maybe half an hour or so to work on things before going to adult for the day.

Obligatory #SNESClassic Post

Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition
So! Unlike the NES Classic (which honestly, I wasn’t interested in at all), I’ve been quietly hype for the SNES edition. The Super Nintendo was my childhood, the way the NES was for so many people last year. Then just as much as now, though, my game tastes skewed very heavily to RPGs, so there’s a lot on here I haven’t played.

I was a bit ill last night after work, so while I got to unbox everything during yesterday’s lunch break, I haven’t been able to actually play until this morning. I let the demo screen run a bit, until I saw this:

Final Fantasy 3 SNES

I’ve been nostalgic for “Square Co.” and the old “SquareSoft” logos often over the years, but seeing it again like this almost made me cry this morning. To be fair, I hadn’t had any coffee yet, but still. Nostalgia, and tons of it.

Unfortunately, I do have work this morning, so I don’t have time to start up any of the serious RPGs of my tweens. Instead I started with F-Zero, a game I’m just as bad at as before but that’s still just as fun, and then moved on to Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. This and Chrono Trigger are probably the best-ever SNES games for me (even above the Final Fantasies) and since it’s a lot more forgiving on traditional saves (yes, the system has emulator save states, but for these first few hours they don’t feel right) it was a safe game to start up without getting trapped. I stopped (but still haven’t saved or cut off the game) right as I left the throne room to write this, because I remembered I wasn’t able to last night, but I’ll get back to it and save after I get out of this little mini-dungeon between the castle and the sanctuary.

There is more I want to say about the system, but I want to play it more first. However: if you’re feeling really, painfully nostalgic, set the display to the CRT mode:

SNES Classic CRT mode on Zelda: LttP

This pic doesn’t do it justice, but try it. And then switch the display mode back. It’s just as fuzzy as you remember, though if it gives you any headaches, don’t blame me. (Related: It could be my eyes or my TV, but I can’t see a difference between 4:3 and Pixel Perfect modes on the bits I’ve tried so far. I’m still using Pixel Perfect, though, because it’s there for a reason, right?)

Anyway, here are the rest of my unboxing pics from lunch yesterday.

  • Console: So tiny! (Including original further down for scale!)
  • Controllers: Just like I remember. (Also: cords more than two feet long!)
  • Back: Weird not having the expansion port.
  • “Now You’re Playing with Super Power!”

  • Setting it up.

  • Menu and Zelda

Anyway, I have about 20 minutes left before I have to get ready for work, so I’m going to get through these few rooms to the sanctuary, then maybe just run around the map a bit. (Much) Later, I’ll decide if I want to jump into Earthbound or Mario RPG (neither of which I’ve finished, we only had them on rentals) or Secret of Mana (the main reason I wanted this in the first place) soon-ish, or if I want to try and get an external capture card and stream any of those instead. I mean, there’s kinda enough for me to play in the meantime, if I do decide to wait.

Hurricane

First, Important Stuff™: The Caribbean has been hit by Irma far harder than any of us anywhere in the US will be. If you can, pick one of the charities at the bottom right of this page and throw a buck their way. If they ask, specify that you’d like the donation to go to the Caribbean in general, or any of the specific areas impacted, rather than to a general donation fund. (Also I’d avoid the Red Cross if possible; they’re tied for last on accountability and stuff. I think Direct Relief has the highest rating for percentage of funds actually being distributed to helping, rather than going to administrative costs and stuff.)

Okay, personal stuff: Irma’s way out still and won’t even be touching Florida until… midday tomorrow? …but still she’s already inching away from my area bit by bit and we won’t have any effects here until I’m guessing overnight Sunday-Monday? We were originally down for a direct hit but the track has pushed just west of us that I barely expect a power outage. I mean, we only had one very brief outage with Matthew, and that actually was a hurricane when it came onshore barely north of us.

Of course I say that and now she’ll swing back east at us because I have.

Regardless of what she does or doesn’t do, the entire area is still under a mandatory evacuation starting tomorrow morning. I don’t even consider going anywhere for less than a medium-or-higher category three storm, partially because someone needs to be here to assess the post-storm for work but mostly because I’m massively overconfident when it comes to bad weather of any kind. No joke, most of my life I’ve actively believed I’ll go down from a lightning strike, and that doesn’t really frighten me.

So… either way? I’ll be here. Here at home, here online (again, just like last year). I might spend time streaming; I confirmed last time that the lag in my twitch chat is too much to ask people to crowd-play TWAU with me, but I can still play it in general and anyone who’s stuck home but has a connection can watch that if they want. I’m sure I’ll do at least episode two over the next few days. Or other games, or offline games, idk.

I’ll post if anything changes around here, and if anyone is bored I’ll be around to chat.

The Wolf Among Us: Faith

I finally got off my butt (or on it, in front of the tv?) and restarted TWAU this afternoon. I wasn’t really feeling the best, so I only played through the first episode so far. I remembered most of this one from when I played before, but this is the only chapter I have played previously so future posts for the game will be completely blind playthroughs.

As always a copy of the stream is saved to my channel over on Twitch, if anyone wants the copy with chat included!
